A gift from Great-Grandpa Werner

My Grandma Ruth passed away when I was in high school and I miss her dearly. I often think of how she would have loved to see her daughters grow into amazing women, both pursuing their passions and being incredible mothers, wives and friends. She loved having us grand kids around but never had the chance to see us grow into young adults and now starting our own lives, careers and families. When Sophie was born and my mom was right there, Day 1, to see her and share this absolutely incredible moment with me, I again missed my Grandma Ruth. Would have been pretty neat to have four generations together.

Her husband, my grandpa Werner, once told me after receiving a package of Sophie pictures, that he placed one picture right next to a picture he has of grandma Ruth on his nightstand so “she could see Sophia every day”. I was of course in tears.

For Christmas this year, grandpa Werner sent Sophie a pair of pink, corduroy overalls. She wore them today and I hope that Grandma Ruth was looking down from heaven seeing us all and realizing how wonderful she was and how much she is missed. Thanks Grandpa Werner.

Another trim

Turns out Sophie’s bangs grow super-fast and so on Wednesday night, we took her to Super Cuts to get them trimmed. If you remember from last time, Sophie’s first hair cut happened with Dada’s hair stylist Atilla in Beverly Hills and turned out super cute. Well, this time….not so much. We called, made an appointment, showed up, I held her in my lap and the lady went to work. 3 minutes later, Sophie looked like Madeline. And there you have it. Before and after below.

Road Trip 2 Location in the News

Located in Atlanta, is a replica of the White House that was used as a location in Road Trip 2. Today, the owner is featured in this CNN story about the economy. In the movie, the mansion is home to Arash, the Crown Prince of Tandoor, who was sent to America to study accounting because he lacks good dicatorial instincts.

A Sophie Update

Our little one continues to develop and change so I thought it was about time I share the latest with you all since many of you don’t get to hang with her much. First off, she’s become super snuggly…quite a change from her first year where she grew some nice arm muscles always pushing us away.. Now though, she loves to run up and give you hugs, kisses and pat your back.

Her vocabulary is growing daily. She can now say: birdie, girl, hot, shoes, mama, dada, up, fish, wow, hi, bye-bye, hat, bed, tickle tickle, nana (for banana), wa (for water), da (for dog), ba (for ball) and dadu (thank you). She says “mmmmm” when she sees food or you put her bib on and she can make animal sounds for a cat, dog and pig.

She likes to rough-house; gets super excited when we say “let’s go on a walk,” and plays peek-a-boo. She still loves to “read,” and rather than just pointing to the pictures and looking for us to tell her what they are, she now recognizes and says them herself.

Her favorite toys, besides books, are her cart (which she loads and unloads daily), tupperware, hangers, papers (especially dada’s school work) and making loud noises/music. Oh yeah, dancing is also still a favorite hobby. And of course, eating. Lots.

Beer Pong Goes Legit

Only on the L.A. Dime can you get a heart-felt, patriotic, drippingly emotional discourse on the glory of American democracy, followed by a shameless shill-job for an R-rated movie about Beer Pong.

That being said, since Road Trip 2: Beer Pong (which I wrote) will be released later this year, I thought I’d share this great article by famed ESPN columnist Rick Reilly about his trip to The World Series of Beer Pong. Enjoy. And God Bless America.

How Fortunate We Are…

…to live in a nation comprised of divergent races, religions, convictions, and ideologies. A nation where, despite these vast, sometimes contentious, and unfortunately all too often, painful differences, we can unite, bound by the one uniform law that governs us all, the Constitution, and peacefully transfer power in a time of tremendous strife and turmoil, the likes of which often sends lesser nations into chaos and war. This profound gift was hard won by men and women of great vision, willing to risk all and declare independence from tyranny, to give their lives on blood-soaked battle fields here and abroad, to march and protest and scream for justice when the majority chose to stand opposed or simply look away. But this gift is not our birthright. It must be earned and renewed with each rising generation. Now, for us, it is not enough to simply mark this inauguration and note its place in history; to someday say we watched, were moved, and agreed. Now, for us, it is not enough to simply preserve and protect this gift. We must work to advance it, improve it, and deliver it safely to our children along with a strong knowledge of their role in it. Our new President’s remarkable journey is testament to the power within each of us to strive for the betterment of our nation. So, in this New Year, this new administration, and this new era, let us all commit to advance, preserve, protect, and defend the grand gift that is America.

Houseguests, homemade pizza and beer pong!

Our dear friend Jan and his lovely girlfriend Kerry have been staying with us for a little while as they await their next work assignment. This has been a wonderful opportunity to catch up, eat wonderful homemade food and play silly games. This past weekend Jan made pizza from scratch (although a wine bottle had to suffice for a rolling pin). The flavors were steak with a mustard/horseradish sauce and a tomato/basil….both were super yummy and didn’t last long. Faleena brought a delicious sopapilla cheesecake desert. After dinner, the boys played beer ping (courtesy of Brad’s latest movie “Road Trip 2: Beer Pong”) while the girls chatted and watched their men destroy themselves. Thanks to Jan, Kerry, Mark and Faleena for always making us laugh — we treasure our friendships with you so very much.

Let me explain

I have always enjoyed the seasons. Experiencing each month through weather and the activities/events that come with it is what makes each year special and builds those memories that you build your life on. Whether it’s seeing the tulips in the spring, eating elephant ears at the summer fairs, picking out pumpkins in the cool fall air or skiing/sledding in the winter months are some of my favorite times. Living in CA, those events are not quite the same. I know that many of you might find yourselves in nasty rains, cold temperatures and long johns right now but I’d much rather have a true sense of the season than 85 degrees on January 11th! Sunshines does add to a more positive outlook on life and many of my CA friends say that people from all over the country move here for the weather, I just really enjoy the seasons and wish we had a bit more of them here.

What’s better than talking a nice walk on a cool, clear fall day, wearing a cozy sweater and seeing your breath as you see the colored leaves fall off the trees and hear them crackle under your feet? Then you go home, make yourself a hot chocolate, take a nap or curl up on the couch with the fire place on. All of that just isn’t the same when you’re wearing shorts and have the A/C on. I’m just saying……
